Who were those guys?

The Bills defense played a great game on Sunday. They gave up just 10 points and 199 net yards.  They stopped the New York Jets on third down 12 of 13 times.  The sacked Josh McCown three times and picked him off twice.  And we didn't talk about the defense at all on our show.  They were an after thought thanks to the completely unexpected performance by the Bills offense.

With Matt Barkley making his Bills debut, a Bills offense that produced a TOTAL of three touchdowns in the last six games, found the end zone four times in the first half alone.  Considering he had been a Bill for less than two weeks, Barkley was impressive.  He got the ball out on time,  showed good accuracy, made good decisions, and had a nice touch on some throws that required him to put some air into the ball and drop it into the bucket.

Barkley even completed a deep throw on the very first offensive play.  You might not have even been in your favorite game day seat before the Bills had their first touchdown.  A 47 yard bomb to Robert Foster was followed by a 28 yard touchdown run by LeSean McCoy. Two plays, 75 yards and a touchdown.  Exactly what we all expected, right?

McCoy had his best game of the season finishing with 113 yards and a pair of touchdowns.  You had to feel very happy for the Bills number one running back who had to be frustrated with his performance as well as the overall struggles of the offense this season.

As long as we are pointing out stars on the offense, how about the offensive line?  That group, which included rookie Wyatt Teller making his first NFL start, put together its best all around performance of the season.  There were big holes for McCoy and Marcus Murphy to run through and Barkley had plenty of time to look for an open target when he dropped back to throw.

Lost in the misery of the 2018 season has been the development of second year wide receiver Zay Jones.  He has become the most reliable target in the passing game and I don't mean that as as backhanded compliment since that position needs to be overhauled in the off season.  Jones has gotten over the drops issue that plagued him last year.  He is consistently getting open and in this game was a huge weapon on third downs, converting a handful on runs after catches.

There was a touchdown pass to left tackle Dion Dawkins. The Bills pulled off a successful fake punt that saw former college quarterback Logan Thomas complete a pass to rookie Robert Foster.  The Bills had a 100 yard rusher and a 100 yard receiver in the same game!

All in all it was an enjoyable day of Bills football.  What does it mean in terms of where this season will go?  Probably nothing.  It sure looked like the Jets had given up on their season, perhaps knowing their head coach will soon be out of a job.  I doubt the Bills will get themselves back into the wild card race despite the fact the schedule looks very favorable for the final six games.  But hey it was fun to watch the Bills and it was great to see points, lots of points from an offense that was on pace for the lowest points per game average in franchise history.
