Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) - Lawrence Pilut had a breakout season in the Swedish Hockey League and it caught Jason Botterill’s eye. The Sabres have signed the 22-year-old defenseman to a two-year, entry-level deal.

Pilut is on the small side at 5’11”, but he skates very well. Last season for HV71, he had eight goals and 30 assists for 38 points in 52 games. Before this season, his career high in points was 12 in 48 games.

His 30 assists was fifth in the league.

Pilut is a five-year veteran of the SHL and last season, was named the league’s Defenseman of the Year.

With the signing of Pilut, it makes you wonder if Botterill is going to offer a contract to restricted free agent Victor Antipin. In April, Antipin didn’t rule out returning to the KHL.
