The Sabres look for nine straight wins in Detroit

Detroit, MI (WGR 550) - A couple of red hit teams tangle on Saturday in Detroit. The Sabres have won eight straight games and are 12-2-2 in their last 16. The Red Wings have won 6-of-8 and 9-of-12 and have taken six of their last seven on home ice including four in a row.

Buffalo has won four straight road games and have gone 6-2-1 in its last nine away from home.

With the eight straight wins, the Sabres have climbed to third in the NHL with a points percentage of .696. Both Nashville and Tampa Bay are at .717.

Both these teams are pretty good penalty killers. Detroit is fifth in the NHL at 82.3 percent, while the Sabres are ninth at 81.5.

Jeff Skinner leads the NHL with 17 goals. He has 16 goals in his last 16 games. Jack Eichel is also red hot with 19 assists and 21 points in his last 16 games. Eichel is fourth in the NHL with 21 assists.

Rasmus Dahlin’s ice-time has increased dramatically in the last five games. Friday against Montreal, Dahlin played 23:31. He also has seven points in his last seven games.

Sam Reinhart is also heating up with 11 points in his last 10 games.

There was no morning skate, but with back-to-back games and three games in four days, I would expect Linus Ullmark in goal. This season Ullmark is 4-0-1 with a 2.65 goals against and .922 save percentage.

Ullmark’s last outing was a week ago in Minnesota where is gave up two on 39 shots in a victory over the Wild. In a quirk, six of Ullmark’s seven starts have come on Saturday. The only exception was a Thursday start in Montreal where he gave up five goals in 40 minutes, before being pulled.

After Friday night’s game, the Sabres sent Lawrence Pilut back to Rochester.

Another reason I think Ullmark will get the call is Carter Hutton has played in eight of the last nine games.

Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Bernier have split the last six games for Detroit with Bernier playing two of the last three.

Howard has played very well lately giving up just nine goals in his last five starts winning four of them. Overall Howard is 7-6-2 with a 2.60 goals against and .924 save percentage.

Dylan Larkin leads the Red Wings with 19 points in 22 games. He has been held pointless in 3-of-4 games.

Andreas Athanasiou is the only Detroit player in double figures in goals with 10. He has points in 9-of-13 games scoring 10 goals and four assists for 14 points.

Join Brian Koziol for the pregame starting at 6:00 when he’ll have interviews with Phil Housley, Jeff Skinner and one other player.
