Boston, MA (WGR 550) - Two players got to play their first NHL games of the season on Sunday in Boston. Matt Hunwick made his Sabres debut while Brendan was also called up. The Sabres have 11 defenseman up here due to injury and Guhle said he found out during Saturday’s game in Rochester that he was flying to Boston. Guhle said he was told he was coming up in the second intermission and sat on the bench as watched the third period.

Guhle wasn’t the first defenseman called up to Buffalo because he got off to a real slow start this season. Things have been better lately and Phil Housley said, “Last year he was really attacking the game and using his speed, I think he got a little bit away from that, so it’s more or less trying to find his identity as a player and I think he’s found that in the last 10 games.

“He’s contributing offensively, we want him to continue to add to the rush and use his speed to his benefit.”

Guhle didn’t have a good training camp until the preseason game in Oshawa against the Islanders. He started the season off poorly too and the kid said he was trying to see how he fits, “I think maybe trying to get back into the groove of things and finding the way I want to play that gives the team success, so over the last seven or eight games, I’ve been doing that a lot better.”

When Guhle was struggling, I wondered if he was getting frustrated. He said, “No, every player goes through ups and downs and it’s important to be able to bounce back from those and when I was in a tough spot there, I knew I’d get out of it eventually and I think I was able to do that.”

In his first game in Buffalo Guhle was paired with Hunwick and did give the puck away a few times, but he also got up ice a few times and used his speed like Housley wants him to. People seem to forget that he's only 21-years-old and is not a bust or even close to one. He has plenty of time to reach his potential.
