Sabres game night blog

January 17, 2019 - 7:52 am

The Buffalo Sabres beat the Calgary Flames last night 4-3 in overtime. Jack Eichel scored the winner. What follows is a running commentary from around the time I got home last night. I hope you like it.

The game will not start until after 9:30 p.m. That is late for me. I mean, I don’t go to bed before 9:30 p.m., at least not usually. Ok, sometimes I may go to bed by then. Look, I went to bed at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, but partly that was so I would be well rested for Wednesday, when the Sabres game will go until midnight!

I don’t do so well with midnight anymore. Chances are something has gone drastically wrong in the Parker family planning department if if I’m awake at midnight.

I kind of fell asleep. Shut up.

I didn’t fall asleep. Maybe you fell asleep. I absolutely, positively did not fall asleep.

I’m taking a bit of a break to eat the delicious curried chicken my wife made for dinner.

Carter Hart is in goal for the Flyers and he’s only three years older than my son, Owen, and I wish time would slow down just a little.

Eventually, this lands me on NBCSN for the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers. Here’s a question. Why when the Sabres play the Flyers on NBCSN do we get the Flyers broadcast crew, but tonight for Bruins-Flyers, it’s John Forslund and Eddie Olczyk? Is it just travel schedules? Carolina is off so Forslund is free? Probably. Whatever, it kind of annoyed me.

You know, after my wife and I were done talking about our days.

Before that though, we have to find our way to 9:30 p.m. in the first place. This is challenged immediately upon my arrival home as I sit down on the couch next to my wife and as we chat about our days I feel my eyes closing. It is about 7:20 p.m. Long way to go. I quickly dismiss the notion of a quick nap being a good idea and find a hockey game to watch.

Anyways, in an effort to not fall asleep watching this Sabres-Flames tilt, I’m going to take a run at keeping a running blog while the game dramatically unfolds in front of us. Hopefully you’re reading this the morning after the Sabres have taken down one of the very top teams in the NHL.

Yes, even on weekends.

  • 9:35 p.m. - Almost game time. I like this George Canyon fella on the anthems.

First period:

  • Jack Eichel hits iron clean in alone on David Rittich in the opening seconds and reacts in an exasperated manner. I say don’t worry about it. The Sabres scored early in Edmonton and then got their faces caved in so it’s fine that Eichel didn’t score.
  • Don’t ever accuse me of not being able to make the best of any situation.
  • How did the Flames not score when Linus Ullmark was facing the wrong way in his net? Like, Ullmark was completely backwards.
  • Well, we’re only five minutes in and so far this idea of writing while watching is working pretty well. I’m very alert and not jamming tortilla chips into my face because I’m typing.
  • Good shift for Vladimir Sobotka, Evan Rodrigues and Jason Pominville. Nice play by Sobotka to set up Pominville for a one-timer at the edge of the slot.
  • I like how the Sabres are playing so far. They’ve had some good chances and aside from the sequence where Ullmark was backwards in his net, have not been too scrambled in their own end. A goal would be nice.
  • I know what I said earlier, but I kind of wish Eichel had buried that breakaway in the opening seconds. But you probably didn’t need me to tell you that. You recognize high quality rationalizing when you see it.
  • Ooh, a power play.
  • Jeff Skinner goes falling awkwardly in the corner and looks like he hurt an arm or shoulder. Right to the room. Yikes.
  • Solid job by Ullmark standing his ground on a shorthanded breakaway.
  • I’m having a hard time thinking about anything other than if Skinner has returned to the bench. Hopefully after this commercial break he’ll be on the ice.
  • Ok, Skinner is out there for his regular shift. Phew.
  • Eichel alone in front and he fires over the net. Sad face emoji.
  • So Skinner wasn’t offsides. Let’s review that and give Buffalo the puck back on the rush. That sounds like a pretty stupid idea, right? You know what else is stupid? Going back 30 seconds prior to a goal to see if a player was a fraction offsides and then disallowing the goal.
  • One second! One damn second! That sucks. Good period, then that. Gaudreau buries a rebound. Lots of hot takes on the Twitter machine about the rebound Ullmark left there. I mean, it’s a booming slap shot, low blocker side. Maybe you’d like him to deflect it with his stick up and out of play, but a low well placed shot is very likely to leave a rebound. Credit to the shooter.

Second period:

  • Holy cow, Ullmark gets lost behind the net and makes a fantastic glove save scrambling back. Wow.
  • I’m a little surprised it has taken me until now to say something about the Calgary fans and all the jerseys. So many jerseys. It’s really impressive.
  • Ullmark windmill mustard glove job on Gaudreau and I don’t care if that’s the proper lingo. That save was sweet.
  • Ooh, a power play. Seems like they’ve ditched the multiple drop pass entry thing so that’s a relief. That being the only thing I have to say about the power play is in no way a positive.
  • Sweet pass from Casey Mittelstadt and great finish by Rodrigues and we’re tied 1-1.
  • Trading decent chances. Saying it again because who knows what’ll happen from here. I like the Sabres game so far tonight. Now get some goals.
  • Still not cramming tortilla chips into my face so that’s a plus. Maybe I’ll go for the late night bowl of cereal at some point. Little cereal talk for you. If you see the new Special K Cinnamon and Brown Sugar Crunch don’t do it. It’s horrible. There are no flakes, so no K, I guess? Just these stale little nuggets of cinnamon and brown sugar. It’s like if Super Sugar Crisp has been coated in shellack and sold under the guise of being Special K. What are you doing Special K? What makes you think you can make a flake less cereal and fly the Special K flag over it? Get it together Special K. I expect much more from such a heritage brand.
  • The Sabres survive a late Calgary power play and the Second period ends 1-1.

Third period:

  • Let’s go!
  • Close call on the leaker there for Ullmark but he got on it.
  • Power play goal for Calgary. Matthew Tkachuk from Elia Lindholm and Johnny Gaudreau. Pretty play, great skill on display. 2-1.
  • Dahlin-bomb! Is that a thing? 2-2.
  • Thank you post. Man watching Gaudreau every night must be a blast. What a player.
  • Jake McCabe from downtown through a pretty hearty screen from Okposo and it’s 3-2.
  • That second intermission bowl of Honey-Ohs really hit the spot by the way.
  • So tonight’s bad break is Lawrence Pilut getting cross checked in the throat and it’s tied 3-3.
  • Ooh, a power play. Ugh.
  • Definitely in, at least, get me a point territory here.
  • OT here we come...Feels like I’ll need Eichel to make a play before Gaudreau does.

  • There it was. Great move and the backhand off the post for Eichel and it’s a 3-on-1 the other way but Calgary doesn’t convert and Eichel is still out there?
  • Eichel walks Giordano and buries it short side. Sabres win 4-3.

Hope you enjoyed this. Talk to you at 3 p.m.

Now, I’m going to bed.
