Sabres down Red Wings 5-1

January 12, 2020 - 4:52 pm

The Buffalo Sabres scored early and often against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday evening, as the blue and gold were victorious on the road by a score of 5-1 inside Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

The Sabres got things going 2:39 into this Atlantic Division contest. Curtis Lazar fed Evan Rodrigues for the forward's first goal of the season. It was the first time since March 17, 2019 that Rodrigues had found the back of the net, and he wasted little time scoring his second of the campaign later in the period.

Less than a minute after Buffalo opened the scoring, Jack Eichel skated through the Detroit defense and drew a slashing penalty out of veteran defenseman Mike Green. With Green in the box, the Sabres powerplay, successful on just two of its last 23 attempts, went to work.

Exactly at the 5:00 mark of the opening frame, Rodrigues struck again for his second goal of the early evening. He was able to stuff a puck past Howard short-side on the man advantage. Helping on the play were defensemen Henri Jokiharjiu and Brandon Montour.

The Sabres had already posted an even-strength and a powerplay goal, and with 7:17 left in the first period they added a short-handed marker to their list. With the Red Wings now on a powerplay of their own courtesy of a Zach Bogosian boarding minor, a puck was coughed up at the blue line by forward Robby Fabbri. Zemgus Girgensons was there to pick up the loose change, and broke free towards Howard on an uncontested breakaway.

Girgensons beat the veteran netminder on the forehand to extend Buffalo's lead to 3-0. It was the team's third short-handed goal of the season.

That score stood until there was 11:56 left in the second period, when Detroit found themselves a goal to ruin another potential shutout bid for Ullmark against the Red Wings. Defenseman Madison Bowey's shot from the point snuck through a screen and past the Sabres goaltender to make it a 3-1 contest inside Little Caesars Arena.

Buffalo made it a 4-1 contest early in the third period of play off the stick of Bogosian. The defenseman controlled the puck at the right circle, danced towards the slot and let loose a backhand through traffic that beat Howard. Bogosian joined Rodrigues in the "first goal of the season" department.

Also on the play, Michael Frolik received a secondary assist. It was his first as a Buffalo Sabre since being acquired from Calgary on January 2.

The lead quickly became 5-1 when another Sabres defenseman scored; this time on the powerplay. With defenseman Green of the Red Wings again in the penalty box, Rasmus Ristolainen helped muscle a puck over the goal line on the man advantage for the Sabres' second powerplay score of the evening.

Eichel was given the primary assist on the powerplay tally, meaning his active point streak extended to a seventh game with the effort.

The chain of events were a mirror image of the opening period in Detroit. Buffalo scored within the first three minutes of the frame, then drew a penalty out of Green. While the defenseman served his respective minors, the blue and gold capitalized on the powerplay both times over.
