Sabres dominate Blues 5-2

December 10, 2019 - 7:26 pm

The Buffalo Sabres put forth a strong, 60-minute effort on home ice as they took care of the visiting St. Louis Blues, 5-2, inside KeyBank Center on Tuesday night.

The Sabres got the joint rocking about as early as possible. With just 18-seconds gone in the game, Sam Reinhart got a puck past Blues' netminder Jake Allen to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead. It was Reinhart's 12th goal of the season, with help from Victor Olofsson and Brandon Montour.

St. Louis had an answer, though, just over three-minutes later in the opening frame. With 3:37 gone, forward Troy Brouwer deposited his first goal of the year past Linus Ullmark and the score was quickly knotted a goal apiece in western New York.

That 1-1 tie would hold through the rest of the first period. The Sabres held a 11-9 edge in shots as the teams broke for intermission number one.

With just over six minutes gone in the second period, Buffalo had one of their more dangerous chances begin develop.

Casey Mittelstadt, re-inserted into the lineup after being a healthy scratch in Edmonton Sunday night, found Jeff Skinner all alone in the slot. As Skinner looked to get his shot off, his stick snapped in half as he connected with the puck on the ice. The play fell apart, and the opportunity was lost as the score remained 1-1.

Buffalo would then grab a 2-1 edge in the waning seconds of the period on an odd play. Zach Bogosian ripped a puck wide of the St. Louis net, which deflected off a stanchion across the ice to a wide-open Johan Larsson.

With St. Louis' Allen creeping out of his net to play what he thought was going to be a puck behind the goal, Larsson deposited the go-ahead goal into an essential empty net for the one-goal advantage just 8.6-seconds ahead of the second intermission.

The Blues wasted little time evening the score for the second time on Tuesday night. After some back-and-forth hockey played in both zones, St. Louis forward David Perron found defenseman Alex Pietrangelo on a 2-on-1, and Pietrangelo cashed in to make it a 2-2 contest with 3:52 gone in the third period.

As it turned out, Jack Eichel was having none of that nonsense. The captain realized time was running out for him to extend his point streak to 14 games, and he went to work.

Displaying some elite patience, Eichel waited out Jake Allen and ripped his 19th goal of the campaign above Allen's left shoulder to give the Sabres another lead at 3-2. It was their third such one-goal advantage of the night, as since their opening goal of the first period, they had yet to trail the Blues at any point.

Then with the St. Louis net empty in the final minute of regulation, Buffalo finally attained that multi-goal lead they had been searching for. In a span of just 50-seconds, Zemgus Girgensons and Jack Eichel potted empty-net tallies to extend the lead to 5-2 over the Blues. The three-goal advantage would stand as the final inside KeyBank Center.
