Olofsson named AHL Player of the Week

It was a great week of action for the Rochester Americans, who will enter Wednesday night's action against the defending AHL champion Toronto Marlies with three straight wins after a shaky 0-2 start to the season.

The Amerks took care of business in a weekend series with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, taking both games in dramatic fashion courtesy of rookie forward Victor Olofsson.

On Saturday, Olofsson scored with one minute left to play in regulation to give Rochester a 4-3 win in Bridgeport. The 23-year-old Swede entered the zone and took the puck wide-right to try and get around the Sound Tigers defenseman. Using his speed, Olofsson get some space and let go of a high backhand shot that beat goalie Christopher Gibson short-side for the go-ahead goal.

He also added an assist on the power play in the third period as Alex Nylander tied the hockey game with a one-time shot that hit the goal post, hit Gibson's back side and rolled into the net.

The next day, Olofsson worked his magic again in overtime as he scored the game-winning goal at the 1:46 mark of the extra frame to give the Amerks a 3-2 win. This time, Olofsson gathered the puck in the defensive zone and skated into three defenders in the Bridgeport end. Then, from the top of the faceoff circle, he curled and let go of a shot that beat goalie Jeremy Smith on the blocker side, off the post and in.

Olofsson also added his fourth point of the weekend on a power play goal from defenseman Zach Redmond that tied the game at 2-2.

When you add on the three-point night that Olofsson had last Wednesday night in Rochester against the Syracuse Crunch, Olofsson had racked up seven points (three goals and four assists) in three games. That performance was good enough to earn Olofsson honors as the AHL Player of the Week for the week of October 8th to the 15th.
