The Oilers fire their GM Peter Chiarelli

(WGR 550) - The Edmonton Oilers finally fired general manager Peter Chiarelli. Chiarelli is the man who traded away Tyler Seguin while he was the GM in Boston and Taylor Hall while in Edmonton.

Chiarelli got Reilly Smith, Joe Morrow, Matt Fraser and Loui Eriksson back form Dallas in the Seguin trade and he received Adam Larsson back from New Jersey in the Hall exchange.

He also signed Milan Lucic to a seven-year, $42 million deal at the age of 28. Lucic scored 23 goals in the first season of that contract and 10 in the second season. This year he has five goals in 50 games.

He acquired Griffin Reinhart from the Islanders for a first and second round pick. The Islanders used that 16th overall selection to take Mathew Barzal. New York traded the other pick to Tampa Bay and got another first-round pick and selected Anthony Beauvillier.

Chiarelli had the brilliant idea of signing Drake Caggiula out of North Dakota. He scored 27 goals in 156 games and has no goals in eight games with Chicago.

I can go on and on, but I think the question that needs to be asked is why did the Oilers hire Chiarelli in the first place after he was an utter failure in Boston?

Oilers CEO Bob Nicholson held a press conference as said, “I want to emphasize again, we got some real good players. We got some real good staff. But there’s something in the water here in Edmonton that we don’t have right. And we got to get that figured out.” Nicholson said he fired Chiarelli at the end of the second period of Tuesday game against Detroit so he could quietly leave the building.

OK after reading all that, I now know how Chiarelli was hired.

Chiarelli was hired by the Oilers in April of 2015.
