McCarron gets first shot with first team again

PITTSFORD (NY) - There’s a trend developing in the Bills’ quarterback situation.

Once again, it was A.J. McCarron taking the lead role with first-team reps. That’s the third out of four practices McCarron has been the first QB in, ahead of Nathan Peterman and Josh Allen.

Peterman was the second quarterback in Sunday afternoon on Military Appreciation day here at St. John Fisher College. Then it was the rookie Allen’s turn after that. But, as usual, all three QBs wound up taking snaps with the starting offense at some point throughout the practice.

The team’s first preseason game is Thursday night at home against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Sean McDermott has yet to name a starter or announce what the rotation will be for that contest. Based on the last several practices it won’t be surprising if McCarron gets first crack in the first exhibition game.

Not Practicing

DE Trent Murphy and WRs Kaelin Clay and Cam Phillips all missed the session. Murphy has been sidelined with a groin injury. There was no specific injury given for Clay or Phillips, both of whom left Friday night’s practice early.

Zay is back

WR Zay Jones returned to the field for the first time since last season. Jones missed all of OTAs and minicamp after an off-season that included surgery and a bizarre incident in a downtown LA apartment complex. He had been working off to the side every day with trainers while on the Non-Football Injury List, but finally saw the field Sunday. He wore a red non-contact jersey but participated in full.

Banged up

UDFA WR Robert Foster had to be helped off the field by trainers, then sat down on the sideline and had his right leg looked at. No update was given on his status.

Next up

The Bills will practice here once again tomorrow morning at 8:45 AM. The session is open to the public and no ticket is required to attend.
