Kelly on Eichel: "He's one of the best in the league at attacking a line with speed"

October 26, 2018 - 4:38 pm

Fueled by the Buffalo Sabres' strong 6-4 start to the NHL regular season, Schopp & the Bulldog welcomed TSN and the Point Hockey's Mike Kelly onto WGR to discuss the state of the league and the progress of the Sabres here in 2018-19.

Here is some of the best from Kelly's time with the guys on WGR.

Kelly on taking Canadiens or Sabres in 2018-19:

"I'd still take Montreal over Buffalo.  Sure, they don't have a [Jack] Eichel or a [Rasmus] Dahlin, but I like their depth and they have Carey Price in net."

Kelly on Buffalo's first line:

"[Jeff] Skinner and Eichel have had a ton of scoring chances.  [Jason] Pominville doesn't have to carry the puck on that line."

Kelly on the Sabres projections:

"They'll have to win their winnable games.  There are teams that they are still not in the same class of.  The Ducks are the worst defensive team in the NHL, and the Canadiens had an off night... The Sabres are a dump-in team.  Last year, they dumped the puck in at a top-three rate in the league, and it's nearly the same this year.  During the win streak, offensively everything that goes in has been better thanks to team defense."

Kelly on Eichel:

"On a per-game rate, he's one of the best in the league at transition and attacking a line with speed.  The guy who led the league in that last year was [Connor] McDavid."

Kelly on [Casey] Mittelstadt:

"The Sabres definitely have guys that can transition it.  Casey Mittelstadt might have had his best his game of the year last night.  Six scoring chances.  He's a very slippery player."
