June 24, 2019 - 11:59 pm

The number of back to back NBA MVP winners from 2000-on will remain at five as Milwaukee Bucks F Giannis Antetokounmpo beat out Houston Rockets guard (and reigning MVP) James Harden and Oklahoma City Thunder F Paul George for the top individual award Monday night.

Antetokounmpo is now the second player in Milwaukee's history to win most valuable player joining Kareem Abdul Jabar.

The Bucks finished with the league's best record in the 2018-19 regular season going 60-22. In the playoffs, Milwaukee made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals before losing in six games to the Toronto Raptors. On the year, Antetokounmpo led the way averaging 27.7 PPG 12.5 REB and 5.9 AST per game.

Both Harden and George were also strong candidates for MVP. Harden averaged a league-high 36.1 PPG, shooting almost 37% from behind the arc (36.8%). George was impressive on both ends of the floor as he was also nominated for Defensive Player of the Year.

Antetokounmpo is the first player born outside the United States to win the award since Dirk Nowitzki in 2008. Overall it was a big night for internationally-born players as four took home awards.
