Gameday: Sabres host the Leafs in first game of a home-and-home series

November 29, 2019 - 2:35 pm

Following a 3-2 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night in front of the home crowd at KeyBank Center, the Buffalo Sabres are back at it on Friday afternoon with the first game of a home-and-home series against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

While the Sabres have struggled on paper with a 2-8-2 record in the month of November after opening the season 9-2-2 in October, Buffalo has started to play some relatively solid hockey over the last handful of games.

Against the Flames on Wednesday night, it was Jimmy Vesey and Victor Olofsson who found the back of the net for the Sabres in the losing effort. Linus Ullmark looked solid in goal for Buffalo, making 26 saves on 29 shots faced, but ends up taking the loss after Elias Lindholm was able to slide a puck past his right leg just 1:17 into overtime.

As for the Maple Leafs, the team comes in to Buffalo riding a three-game winning streak with road wins over the Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche and Detroit Red Wings. Toronto enters Friday afternoon playing the final game of a six-game road trip before returning home for the first time since November 15.

Toronto's three-game win streak also comes after the organization relieved head coach Mike Babcock of his duties back on November 20. Since then, new head coach Sheldon Keefe has led his club to three convincing wins.

The Sabres will turn back to Ullmark in goal for Friday afternoon's tilt, while the Maple Leafs will look to backup netminder Michael Hutchinson.

This game is the first of four matchups between the Sabres and Maple Leafs this season. The second half of this home-and-home series will take place on Saturday night at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, followed by the other two matchups between these two teams on Tuesday, Dec. 17 in Toronto and Sunday, Feb. 16 in Buffalo.

The puck drops at 4 p.m. on WGR with the Paul William Beltz Pregame Show starting at 3 p.m.
