Gameday - Sabres and Devils are scoreless after the first period

February 17, 2019 - 6:58 pm

The Buffalo Sabres are fading fast in the NHL playoff race, so the team needs to kick off their three-game road trip with a win against the New Jersey Devils.

Buffalo turned to Carter Hutton for Sunday night against New Jersey, against Cory Schneider for the Devils. The Sabres saw Casey Mittelstadt come back into the lineup, but Kyle Okposo was kept out of the lineup after leaving Friday night's game early after a fight.

The warmups had some intrigue after seeing Buffalo's Zach Bogosian and New Jersey's Kurtis Gabriel mixing it up before the game.

The first period kicked off with a fast pace, with both teams often trading scoring chances that had Hutton and Schneider on their toes often in the scoreless opening period.

Both teams got a power play in the first, but neither team could capitalize on the man advantage. For Buffalo, it would be the first penalty taken by the team in three games, but the Sabres penalty kill was up to the task after taking a too many men bench minor.
