October 18, 2018 - 10:44 pm

Logan Couture netted a hat-trick and the San Jose Sharks scored three times on the power play to down the Buffalo Sabres by a 5-1 score on Thursday night at the SAP Center in San Jose, California .

San Jose took advantage of an early power play, scoring a pair of quick goals in the first period to grab a 2-0 lead. With Kyle Okposo in the box serving a double minor for high-sticking, Joonas Donskoi parked himself in front of the net for his second goal of the season. Erik Karlsson took the initial shot and Donskoi was able to redirect it past Carter Hutton for the first goal of the game. Only 27-seconds later, Couture added another power play goal, a sneaky shot that got through traffic and beat Hutton over his left shoulder.

Back at even strength, Buffalo had chances to got on the board later in the period, but Casey Mittelstadt ripped a shot off the crossbar.

The Sabres finally got on the board at 1:35 of the second period on Jake McCabe's first goal of the year. McCabe took advantage of Martin Jones being screened by his own defenseman, picking the top corner on a shot from the far wall, cutting San Jose's lead in half.

The Sabres kept things close through two periods, only trailing by a 2-1 score and being out-shot by just a 19-16 total. However, the Sharks came in and dominated the third period in order to secure their third win of the season.

Couture scored his second of the night to pad San Jose's lead to 3-1 at the 4:54 mark of the final period. The play started with a Marco Scandella turnover near the Buffalo net. Joe Pavelski made the score 4-1 with San Jose's third power play goal as he taps in a rebound as Carter Hutton was sliding the other way. Finally, Couture capped off the hat-trick with 1:47 to play as he netted an empty-net goal.
