Clayton - They needed a Derek Anderson earlier

October 18, 2018 - 6:42 pm

Last week, John Clayton made some noise with his comments when he went on with Schopp and Bulldog to state that the Bills needed to get newly-added quarterback Derek Anderson ready to start as soon as possible. One week later, Clayton joined Schopp and Bulldog to evaluate where the Bills QB position is now with the injury to Josh Allen.

On Derek Anderson now starting for Buffalo:

"It is damning. It's funny, I want to go back to last week because, remember what I said is that they need to get Derek Anderson in there sooner than later. I can't tell you how many negative comments I got on Twitter. Basically, 'You don't know what you're talking about. You really lost it by saying something like that.'"

"You know I worry about (Josh) Allen. I think that he's going to be a great quarterback but he's not ready yet. And I worried he was going to get the injury, and he got another injury... They needed a Derek Anderson earlier than later. I'm just glad they now have Derek Anderson to put in there and at least give Allen a chance to recover."

On if Anderson's play could shine a negative light on Allen:

"I don't think anything long term, anything Allen is doing now is earlier than he should be. But I don't think you can criticize him for where he is and maybe getting that playing time will help him down the line, maybe missing a couple of games will give him a chance to regroup and he'll get better in his next venture when he gets back on the field."

On if Nathan Peterman still has potential as a backup in the NFL:

"I think it was noticeable as early as last year that you can see that it's not there. You'd love to see him get an opportunity to do it and get it right, but you haven't seen it. Maybe you see one play here, one play there, but it just doesn't seem to work."

You can hear John Clayton's entire interview with Schopp and Bulldog here:

"You would hope that maybe Peterman can go to someplace else and regenerate his career or maybe go to some of the developmental leagues that are being developed and maybe get a chance to do well there. But he just looks terrible."
