Victor Powell reporting

Jason Botterill met with the media on Sunday to discuss the Sabres recent trade of Ryan O'Reilly to the St. Louis Blues. In the trade, the Sabres acquired a conditional first-round draft pick in 2019, a second-rounder in 2021, as well as Vladimir Sobotka, Patrik Berglund, and Tage Thompson from the Blues. The Sabres also got busy in free-agency by signing goaltender Carter Hutton to a three-year, $8.25 million contract.

Here's some of what Botterill had to say to the media on Sunday:

Jason Botterill on signing Carter Hutton:

"We're very excited to have Carter as part of our organization here right now, you look at the situation we are at I think we could talk with people at the draft. We mentioned to the media that this week would be an important week for us to solidify our goaltending situation. you look at Carter's history with some people in our organization, from Jerry Fortune with the college connections, to Andrew Allen working with him in the minors, to Phil Housley working with him in the National Hockey league, There was a comfort level with him. So he was a guy our scouts focused in on, Our analyst departement certainly liked him a lot, you sort of get that charecter check. It allowed us to have a lot of confidence and make a decision to bring Carter to our group."

On Carter Hutton's value to the team:

"As an organization we've talked a lot about having internal competition, and it's a situation where wether it's forward, defense, or goaltending we have to have the strength in our team to get better results out there. But you just look at carter's track record, we're very excited about ullmark's potential but we also don't want to put the pressure on him of carrying the team right off the bat, so what we really like about the background work done on Carter is that he will have the confidence to handle the number one role, but you look at his history of working with young goalies we think it's a great fit for both for Carter becoming our number one and Ullmark developing as a goalie."

On Tage Thompson's role on the team:

"We're excited about our young centers in the organization with the likes of Jack Eichel and Casey Mittelstadt Coming into the NHL now, Sam Reinhart having the ability to playing center too, but we're looking for more scoring from our wings. We're excited of the possibilty with Alex Nylander down the road. And what we see with Tage is a kid with a great shot, great size, has a really good reach out on the ice there, played NHL games as a 20 year old, had an oppurtunity to win a world juniors gold medal. But we think he will be able to step in there with our young centermen and compete for minutes."

On the urgency to move O'reilly before his bonus was due:

"That was certainly a big part of it. If it went past midnight today, the asking price would've certainly been a lot different, you never want to say never but yeah it played a big role in making sure the deal was done today."
