Bills sign Barkley, bring back punter Schmidt

The Buffalo Bills have signed a familiar face to punt for them once again, and also added another quarterback, which may be an indication that Derek Anderson will be unable to play on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Punter Colton Schmidt, who was with the team from 2014-2017 after brief stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns, was re-signed to a one-year deal after the team placed punter Corey Bojorquez on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Schmidt is the franchise's all-time leader in gross yards per-punt (minimum of 250 punts to qualify) with a 44.1 yards per-punt average. He also ranks fifth on the team’s all-time list for total number of punts with 322.

Also, former Bears and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Matt Barkley was signed to the active roster. He may be the No. 2 quarterback Sunday if Anderson doesn’t clear concussion protocol in time to play, which would also mean Nathan Peterman would be the team’s starter under center.

Barkley, a fourth round pick of the Eagles in 2013 out of USC, has started eight NFL games, throwing eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions. To make room for Barkley, running back/special teams player Taiwan Jones was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury.
